This is the festival’s annual competition programme for animated student films from the Nordic and Baltic region. 13 student works have been selected to be screened in the programme and are in the competition for the Golden Gunnar for best Nordic Baltic student film. The films are also eligible to win the Grand Prix and the Audience Award.The programme consists of 13 short films from Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Norway, Sweden and Germany. Films that have been accepted into Fredrikstad Animation Festival’s short film competition are eligible to be nominated for the European Animation Awards. Age Limit: 15

After an exhausting rainy day, a young woman is struggling with her growingly overwhelming feelings. Initially, she has difficulties allowing her tears and fights actively against them. Yet as soon as she learns to accept and appreciate the rain, she also makes peace with crying. In the end, she finds comfort and consolation in her own tears. Oscar Jacobson was born in 1995 in Sweden, and grew up in Zurich, Switzerland. During his graphic design apprenticeship, his passion for illustration grew. Julia Skala was born in 1997 and grew up in Wiesbaden, Germany, with a thriving passion for art and animation. Since 2018, they both study animation at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg.

The vividly crafted stop-motion film illuminates a paradox because of each pair’s incompatible nature. The jury acknowledges the precision and clarity of the film’s message combined with the rich symbolic value that its elements carry. Three couples drifting away. Margrethe Danielsen has a B.A. in Animation from Volda University College, where she is currently pursuing her master's degree.

Pearl Diver

You are trying to get in touch with "your inner self", but it turns out you speak different languages, turning on the self-destruction mode. Sofja Gorelova has no idea how to write biographies, but she happily animates something dark and funny. After two years of studying at an art school, she became bored with drawing static pictures. Knowing nothing about animation, she began to animate different things. So began her journey in the world of animation.

A pleasant film about a worm. Konrad Hjemli likes making these strange short films about worms and stuff. He is becoming too powerful and no one can stop him.

April and Aparna are two young witches going on a magic study exchange. One is a carefree, curious and extra-sociable Indian girl armed with a smile bigger than herself. The other is a gloomy, down-to-earth Welsh girl that wishes everybody would leave her alone. They don't have much in common... except our witches now have to live together! Arielle Demilecamps studied 2D animation at ESAAT, France, after which she worked as a background layout artist on Le Vent dans les Roseaux. In 2016 she moved to Volda, Norway to learn stop motion and immediately fell in love with the technique.

📜 Special Mention Nordic-Baltic Student Film 📜 Jury Statement: Room with a Sea View&nbsp;is a nightmare in black, white and green. And sometimes red. The film uses surreal imagery to tell a story that is immediately relatable and connects to the pitfalls of a mundane life where one avoids taking chances. The jury viewed this film as a sober questioning of man’s inner feelings of inadequacy that is well combined with absurdist humour. Herbert arrives in the seaside city on a long work trip. Accidentally he falls in love with a very strange, beautiful saleswoman in a flower shop. He suffers from insomnia, which he treats by watching billiards on TV. But now it doesn’t help anymore. His obsessive passion keeps him awake… Leonid Shmelkov worked on various animation and film projects in Russia and Europe as a director, artist and animator. Simultaneously he produced several short animated films that were selected to many international festivals and awarded with various prizes, including the Berlin International Film Festival in 2014 and NIKA (Russian Film Academy Award) in 2015.

A curious meeting between two cockroaches, in-between light and darkness. A stop motion animated love story in one act. Elle Frankenberg and August Florén are a director/animator duo currently based in Stockholm, Sweden.

A socio-political analysis of the United States of America's current state of affairs. Noam Sussman is a 2D animator, illustrator and filmmaker from Toronto, Canada.

Oh Say Can You See?

Ranger Megan Patel must uncover the mystery surrounding her brother’s death. But following his footsteps, Megan discovers a darkness she might not escape. Jennifer Alice Wright is a director, character animator, editor and storyboard artist from Bridgend, South Wales. She has just graduated from The Animation Workshop, and is focusing on directing, storyboarding, character animation and spooky story development. She has directed other short films in the past, however 100,000 Acres of Pine is the first to receive an official release.

pan·​dic·​u·​la·​tion / pan-ˌdik-yə-ˈlā-shən – The act of stretching oneself (often accompanied by yawning) Konrad Hjemli from Sarpsborg and Jakob Eiring from Bodø found themselves studying animation together at Volda University College, while also being randomly assigned to being flatmates in the student housing in late 2017. They decided to become friends and together make a film about yawning for their final year exam project. It was a good time.

Pandiculation

A boy, living a fast-paced free roaming life with his friends on the streets of Dublin, doesn’t always have good choices to make. Cora Mckenna is a director, editor, character animator and artist from Kilkenny, Ireland. She recently graduated from The Animation Workshop, with her main focuses during her education being on directing, animating, story development, and creature animation. Despite having made and directed several films, Shergar will be her first official release.

Shergar

The nightly ritual of a security guard – a game of Tetris – is interrupted by unexpected technical issues. One of the surveillance cameras breaks down, and the game sets its own rules. Linda Stūre is a graduate of the Motion Image Sound (KAS) department of the Art Academy of Latvia. Based in Riga, Latvia, she is currently pursuing her M.A. Night Shift is Stūre's graduation short film.

There once was a man feeling sad and in pain, so to get some attention, he hijacks a plane! But seizing an aircraft is quite the chore, so he guzzles a beer. And another. Then a few more. What happened next might seem unbelievable to you, but make no mistake; The story’s quite true. Sondre Johre and Joachim Berg is a director duo from completely different backgrounds. Sondre is young, technically gifted and has a love for 3D animation. Joachim is an old soul, raised on 2D, with an art education in traditional drawing from Florence, Italy. They met while studying animation together at Volda University College from 2017 to 2020.
