The first of two programmes whose films have been hand-picked by the festival administration from other international animation festivals. These 12 films, in our opinion, are some of the best that the international animation scene has to offer right now.

Director's Note:

Programme 1 consists of seven films from France, Belgium, Syria, and Chile, all of which have an experimental and innovative use of animation for storytelling. The animation explores existential issues from completely personal issues such as family relationships, living conditions, to fascism, terror, war, and the end of the world. Believe us when we say that this programme will make you think completely differently about the big questions, or at least with new images created by innovative animation artists.

Based on true events, Bestia explores the life of a secret police agent during the military dictatorship in Chile. Her relationship with her dog, her body, her fears, and her frustrations reveal a grim fracture of her mind and of the country.

Hugo Covarrubias (b. 1977 Santiago) is a stop motion director and animator. He is the founder of the Maleza theater company, a pioneer in mixing theatre with animation, where he co-directed the plays Maleza and Un Poco Invisible. He directed the short films El Almohadón de Plumas and La Noche Boca Arriba. He is currently the art director of the series Zander.
