The first of two programmes whose films have been hand-picked by the festival administration from other international animation festivals. These 12 films, in our opinion, are some of the best that the international animation scene has to offer right now.

Director's Note:

Programme 1 consists of seven films from France, Belgium, Syria, and Chile, all of which have an experimental and innovative use of animation for storytelling. The animation explores existential issues from completely personal issues such as family relationships, living conditions, to fascism, terror, war, and the end of the world. Believe us when we say that this programme will make you think completely differently about the big questions, or at least with new images created by innovative animation artists.

Survivor but amnesiac from the attack at Maalbeek metro station on 22 March 2016 in Brussels, Sabine is looking for the missing image from this over-mediatised event of which she has no memory.

Ismaël Joffroy Chandoutis is developing a “cinématière”, a hybrid artistic practice that expands cinema to the field of contemporary art. His work questions technologies, memory and the virtual and explores the porous worlds of the image. In 2020, his film Maalbeek was selected at the Semaine de la Critique at Cannes.
