Statens barnehus (translated: Government Children's Home) is a service for children and young people who may have been exposed to, or witnessed, violence or sexual abuse, and where there is a registered police report. The service is also available for adults with intellectual disabilities. Statens barnehus also provides advice and guidance to individuals and public bodies in anonymous cases that are unresolved. The overarching idea is based on the abuse of power, and the basis for sexual abuse and violence. The client, the Norwegian Police, wanted a film that would respect the gravity of the theme but convey it with a more light-hearted tone. Rather than trying to portray events such as violence and abuse in a naive or insensitive manner, the symbolism of a card game is used. The concept of "having good or weak cards at hand" is in this story a visual metaphor for something agonizing taking place between two individuals. With the visuals working in tandem with the voice-over, which is using a more straight-forward and practical vocabulary, we aimed for a nuanced presentation of this sensitive topic.
