Support emerging filmmakers and FilmAid by making a donation to FAFF 2020.

The Student Film category features short dramas and documentaries produced by students in FilmAid's year-long, Media Entrepreneurship Training courses in Kakuma and Dadaab Refugee Camps. The short films were produced by diverse teams of young refugees from South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, Congo, Sudan, Uganda and northwest Kenya. Many of the young filmmakers have spent most of their lives in the refugee camps. The Festival is thrilled to be able to provide these talented youth with a platform to have their voices heard.

Abdullahi Mohammed is a father of 7 kids who fled Somalia during the famine that devastated much of the north of the country in 2011 leaving almost 1 million people displaced in its wake. But despite the hardship he’s faced, he’s chosen to focus on the sweeter things in life. He started his bakery to help him survive, but thanks to the high demand for his cookies and cakes during the Muslim high holidays and other special occasions, he’s now trying to show other young men in the camp that the sweet smell of success can be theirs too, but only if they put in the work.
