It all happened one dark night. The Man was tired of being a stranger, tired of being insulted by others simply because he speaks Arabic to a wife who speaks French with their beloved mixed-race son. He looked at the sky and shouted. But that night, far in the cosmos, a voice answered. Combining archive documents and collages to create a blend between diary and science-fiction, Valentin Noujaïm retraces the history of his family.

Valentin Noujaïm was born in France in 1991 to parents from Egypt and Lebanon. After studying political sciences, Noujaïm worked as assistant director and co-writer for the documentary ‘THF Central Airport’ by Karim Aïnouz. (Berlinale Panorama, 2018). Between 2018 and 2019, Valentin made his first experimental documentary, ‘Before She Forgets Heliopolis’, and in 2019 he wrote and directed his second short film ‘The Blue Star’, which was financed by the Doha Film Institute and AFAC. In his short and feature film projects, Valentin brings to life marginal characters, in a fantasized, almost surreal world, rich with social and postcolonial issues.

حصل كلّ شيء في ليلة مظلمة؛ سئم الرّجل من هوّية الغريب التي لاصقته، سئم من إهانات الآخرين دون ذنب منه سوى أنّه يتحدّث العربيّة لزوجته التي تتحدّث الفرنسية. أما طفلهما الجميل فقد حمل هويتين عرفيّتين مختلفتين. نظر الرّجل إلى السماء وصرخ، ولكنه لم يعرف أن نجوم تلك الليلة قد حملت صرخاته إلى أقاصي السّماء.

يجمع هذا الفيلم بين وثائق أرشيفيّة ومجموعات صوريّة، ليقدّم مزيجًا من المذكّرات الشّخصيّة والخيال العلميّ في هذا العمل الذي يقتفي فيه فالينتين نجيم تاريخ عائلته.

وُلد فالنتين نجيم في فرنسا عام 1991 لزوجين من مصر ولبنان. درس العلوم السّياسيّة في الجامعة، وعمل بعد ذلك مساعد مخرج في الفيلم الوثائقيّ "THF Central Airport" لمخرجه كريم عينوز، الذي عُرض الفيلم في قسم البانورواما في مهرجان برلين السّينمائيّ 2018، وقد شارك أيضًا في كتابته. صنع فالنتين في 2018-2019 فيلمه الوثائقيّ التّجريبيّ "Before She Forgets Heliopolis"، وفي عام 2019 عمل على كتابة ثاني أفلامه القصيرة "The Blue Star" وإخراجه، بتمويل من مؤسّسة الدّوحة للأفلام والصّندوق العربيّ للثّقافة والفنون. تتصدّر أعمالَ فالنتين الطّويلة والقصيرة الشّخصيات المهمّشة في عوالم فانتازيّة أقرب للسّرياليّة تُثريها ما تتناوله من قضايا اجتماعيّة ومواضيع تدور في فلك قضايا ما بعد الاستعمار.
