Animation Director // Independent
(Sorry Film Not Ready, Monsieur Pig, Let's Play Like It's 1949)
Janet Perlman is a Montréal-based independent animation director. Her absurdist sense of humour is evident in her films The Tender Tale of Cinderella Penguin, Why Me?, My Favourite Things That I Love, and Sorry Film Not Ready. She has directed segments for Sesame Street, contributed to group films including Marv Newland’s Anijam and Pink Komkommer, Ann Marie Fleming’s Window Horses. Her Cartoon Network TV special Penguins Behind Bars is a parody of “women in prison” films.
At the National Film Board, she developed the ShowPeace series on conflict resolution, which includes her films Dinner for Two and Bully Dance. Her independent film, Let’s Play Like It’s 1949, is a satire that combines animation with archival educational footage. Production on an expanded 5-minute version called Tiny Screens is underway.
Janet has written and illustrated five books: Penguins Behind Bars, Cinderella Penguin, The Emperor Penguin's New Clothes, The Penguin & the Pea, and The Delicious Bug. She has taught animation at Harvard, Rhode Island School of Design and Concordia University.
Among her awards is an Oscar nomination, an Emmy, a Pulcinella Award for best TV movie, the Parent’s Choice Award for best children’s video, Best Short Film at the Montreal World Film Festival, Best Short Film at the Berlin Children's Film Festival and many other international prizes.
She is currently directing a new film at the National Film Board based on the beloved Kate & Anna McGarrigle song Complainte pour Sainte-Catherine.
