A celebration of the talent and legacy of important animated projects with the creators who made them happen.
Jim Capobianco, Academy Award-nominated writer of the Pixar hit, Ratatouille, is currently hard at work on his feature film debut, The Inventor, a stop-motion adventure film about the life of Leonardo da Vinci.
In this presentation, Jim and line producer, Kat Alioshin, take us behind the scenes of the film, sharing everything from concept art and designs to animation tests and music, as well as a set-tour; a great teaser for the feature film which is due for release in 2023.

Jim Capobianco received the 2008 Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay for Ratatouille. He went on to write and direct the short film, Your Friend the Rat, found on the Ratatouille DVD, winning the 2008 ASIFA-Hollywood Annie Award for short films. Jim followed YFtR up with directing the critically acclaimed end titles for Pixar’s 2008 release Wall•E.
A graduate of the California Institute of the Arts, Jim started in the story department at Walt Disney Feature Animation on The Lion King. After five years at Disney, Jim relocated to Pixar Animation Studios, where he was influential on the stories of many of Pixar’s films of the past 19 years, including Toy Story 2, Finding Nemo, Up and Inside Out.
In 2009, Jim finished Leonardo, his first independent film, now in the permanent collection of the MoMA NYC. In addition to his work as a filmmaker, Jim co-created the Bay Area International Children’s Film Festival now in its 9th year. Now with Aerial Contrivance Workshop, Jim is bringing his story and design expertise to the independent world of film and animation.

Kat has been working in stop-motion animation since 1991. Starting with The Nightmare Before Christmas through Coraline in 2009. On James & the Giant Peach, she was Assistant Director to Henry Selick and continues to collaborate with him. She was DP for Some Divine Wind, which is now on permanent collection at MoMA NYC. The stop-motion live-action mixed short Mermaids on Mars won the Carmel Film Festival Animation award along with 21 other festival awards across the country. She received attention for producing Life with Loopy on the Nickelodeon show KaBlam!
Kat met Spike and Mike in 1985 in San Diego, and was part of the publicity and ticket sales team. She travelled with them up and down the California coast. She has remained a close friend to Spike, and has made a documentary about Spike and Mike’s Festival of Animation called Animation Outlaws, released in 2020.

Award-winning author, historian, filmmaker and preeminent expert on women in early animation, Mindy Johnson’s groundbreaking book Ink & Paint – The Women of Walt Disney’s Animation, (Disney Editions) redefines our collective history. Recipient of the AMPAS/Oscars.org Film Scholar Award, and the ASIFA Animation Educators Forum Grant, Mindy’s work continues with her latest research exploring the earliest women of animation. Her Young-Readers volume entitled: Pencils, Pens & Brushes – A Great Girls’ Guide to Disney Animation, (Disney Press) celebrates the contributions of 20 remarkable women within early Disney animation and is a treasure for all ages. Mindy’s critically acclaimed debut, Tinker Bell – An Evolution (Disney Editions) was honoured with rare consecutive Family Choice Awards, and she is a contributing writer for the epic volume, The Walt Disney Film Archives – The Animated Movies 1921-1968, (Taschen); as well as the celebrated collection, Marc Davis: Walt Disney’s Renaissance Man, (Disney Editions).
A frequent speaker, Mindy explores a wide range of presentations with appearances at numerous studios, campuses, international festivals and conferences including: The Smithsonian Speakers Series, Ottawa International Animation Festival, Lucasfilm, Dreamworks, TCM Classic Film Festival, D23 Expo, San Diego ComiCon, CTN Expo, World Animation Festival and more, Mindy has produced record-breaking global campaigns for the film industry while her written, produced and creative work extends to a range of film projects for a growing list of clients, including: AMPAS/Oscars.org, TCM/Turner Broadcasting, WNET/American Masters, SPARK ANIMATION Festival, The Walt Disney Family Museum, The Walt Disney Company, HoriPro Entertainment, Pixar Studios, SiriusXM Radio, and more. Mindy teaches film/animation studies & history, screenwriting & intercultural film at CalArts in Southern CA, and Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA.
