Norwegian-born Canadian animator Torill Kove made the shift from urban planning to animation in 1991 and has never looked back.


In this conversation, the Academy Award-winning director speaks with David Burgess about The Danish Poet, her award-winning film which is celebrating its 15th anniversary.


Torill shares insights into the very personal inspiration for the film, revisits storyboards, designs, and shares stories about the production.

Torill Kove is a Norwegian/Canadian animation director, illustrator and author. She has directed six award-winning animated short films in cooperation with the NFB and Norwegian studios. Three of her films received Oscar nominations and one of them, The Danish Poet, received an Oscar in 2007. In 2013, she directed an animated feature film, Hokus Pokus Alfie Atkins, based on a children's book by the iconic late Swedish author Gunilla Bergström. Torill has adapted four of her animated films to picture books, and also made a wordless picture book about two cats who get caught up in their owners’ custody battle. As an illustrator, she has collaborated with several Norwegian writers. Torill is now working on a new animated short, which she will finish as soon as she can. Torill lives in Montréal.

Dave has almost three decades of experience in the animation industry, working on some of the most iconic 2D and CGI animated films of our time. Dave is currently the Animation Supervisor at Animal Logic's Vancouver studio and has recently wrapped on The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.


In 1991, Dave started at Walt Disney Feature Animation where he was an Animator and Supervising Animator on many of their most successful 2D films including Beauty & The Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King and Tarzan.


In 2001, he switched his pencil for a computer and started at PDI/DreamWorks, working as an Animator, Supervising Animator and Head of Character Animation. His credits during this time include Shrek 2, Madagascar, Over the Hedge, Megamind and Trolls.


Dave graduated from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver with Honours in Animation.
