Puffin Rock, a 78-episode TV series from Cartoon Saloon, Dog Ears and Penguin Books, is becoming a feature film. But, what are the challenges and successes of turning a 7-minute story into 80? This is a presentation by the lead team behind the production. Director Jeremy Purcell, Line Producer Caoimhe Ní Bhrádaigh and Assistant Director Lorraine Lordan will talk about producing the feature film. As well as giving the first glimpse of the new characters, how they approached the longer story and how they are working in a 3-country co-production. All in the time of COVID.

Jeremy is currently directing the Puffin Rock feature film, one of the upcoming releases from the Irish animation studio, Cartoon Saloon. Prior to this position, he was a producer on the short film, A Cat Called Jam, which was produced under the Screen Ireland/RTE Frameworks scheme.


His working relationship with Cartoon Saloon goes back many years, and includes lots of varied productions and roles, from Cartoon Saloon Supervising Director on Pete the Cat for Amazon. Storyworld Sequence Supervisor on the feature film Nora Twomey directed, The Breadwinner, Assistant Director on 2 seasons of the TV show, Puffin Rock, for a total of 78 x 7 min episodes. as well as SFX Supervisor on two Cartoon Saloon, Tomm Moore features, Song of the Sea and The Secret of Kells.

Lorraine Lordan

Assistant Director // Cartoon Saloon

Lorraine joined Cartoon Saloon after leaving college in 1999. When work was scarce, she combined her passion for travel and animation by working in studios in the Czech Republic and Germany, before returning to Ireland to set up her own company, A Man & Ink. As part of supervising projects within that studio, she continued to combine work and travel by moving to Malaysia and Cambodia as an Overseas Director on the TV series, Joe & Jack.


More recently, she has returned to Cartoon Saloon to work on their TV series and feature film productions. With each project, she took on more responsibilities, first becoming an Animation Director, and then Assistant Director. Then, the opportunity to direct a Short Film presented itself through the Frameworks scheme run by Screen Ireland. The film, A Cat Called Jam, is currently enjoying a successful film festival run. It has three nominations for Best Children’s Family Film, winning First Prize in Flickers: Between Takes 2020 and the Best Children's Short Film Award at the Deep in the Heart Festival.


Lorraine is currently hard at work in the role of Assistant Director on the Puffin Rock the Movie. Having worked on the TV series as Animation Director, she is delighted to be part of the team bringing these small-screen characters to the big screen.

Caoimhe Ní Bhrádaigh

Line Producer at five-time Oscar-nominated Cartoon Saloon in Kilkenny, Ireland. Currently working on Puffin Rock the Movie.

Keith Blackmore

Sr. Lecturer // Vancouver Film School


As an animation historian, Keith Blackmore has been a passionate cheerleader and a voice for all-things animated in the Vancouver area for almost 30 years. As one of the producers of the SPARK ANIMATION Festival and an active member of the local SIGGRAPH chapter, Keith has presented, interviewed and moderated at many festivals, local and national.


Since 1995, Blackmore has educated, entertained and inspired students in the history of animation and media studies at the Vancouver Film School. When he’s not reading, teaching or talking about animation, he’s watching it.
