Presentations from concept designers and production designers on the thought process in creating the world.

Join Art Director Deak Ferrand and Concept Artist Florence Durante as they take us inside the process and inspiration for the incredible concept artwork behind Denis Villeneuve’s Dune.

From the brutal architecture of the streets of Arrakeen, to the different family ships, Ferrand and Durante dig into the work it took to adapt a pillar of science fiction, plus insights on the collaboration with production designer Patrice Vermette, the emotional implication behind the sketches, how to approach a brief, and telling a story with no words.

Deak Ferrand

Head of Art Department // Rodeo FX

(Dune, WandaVision, LoveCraft Country, Blade Runner 2049)

Deak Ferrand, renowned artist at the helm of Rodeo FX Los Angeles, brings more than 25 years of experience as Art Director, Concept Artist and Senior Matte Painter. His highly stylized conceptual artwork comes to life with a cinematic sensibility, presenting fully developed scenes, worlds, and creatures at a final level of finish. Equally adept at presenting historically accurate environments as he is at developing intricate fantasy and sci-fi 'other worlds', Deak imaginatively composes and fluidly lights each frame. By experiencing the earliest stages of visualizing motion pictures with his clients, he utilizes his talents to translate his clients' ideas into vivid details and expressions far beyond storyboarding.

Most recently he has collaborated with Production Designer Kalina Ivanov on the series Lovecraft Country (2020), and spent over a year working closely with Director Denis Villeneuve and Production Designer Patrice Vermette creating the world of Dune (2021). Deak has had the pleasure over the course of his career of collaborating with many world-class directors including: Guillermo Del Toro, John Woo, Stephen Sommers, Vincent Ward and many more.

Deak’s industry recognition includes two Emmy nominations, four VES nominations and two wins, a prestigious Nica trophy at the Arts Electronica Awards, and selections at the Toronto Film Festival and the Montreal World Film Festival. Originally from Switzerland, and classically trained as a painter and sculptor, Deak honed his skills as a concept artist and matte painter in Montreal and Hollywood, launching his own studio, HATCH, in 2001, which became part of Rodeo FX in 2014.
