What does food have to do with cultural identity? Everything! Meet our documentary filmmakers who are focusing on those passionate about creating food - an Asian American farmer in Marin County and how a Filipina food artist is using her craft across the nation.

Panelists:

Lisa Yadao, Producer and filmmaker of “Roots and Wing: Yana Gilbuena”

Roots & Wings is a documentary series that profiles WOC chefs who use food as a conduit for cultural awareness and as a means of perpetuating their cultural traditions. Roots & Wings: Yana Gilbuena, the first in the series, features nomadic chef Yana Gilbuena discussing growing up in Iloilo, Philippines, how she got her start as a chef in the pop-up space and left her day job to spread the Filipino food gospel to all 50 states in the US, and the future of Filipino cuisine.

Kuang Lee, Director, @Pamela Gibson MacDougall, Producer of “Rooted”

ROOTED is a short documentary about Asian-American farmers in California fighting to reclaim their agricultural heritage through their cultural roots and communities. It features Scott Chang-Fleeman who is a farmer and owner of Shao Shan Farm, which is a 5 1/2 acre certified-organic farm in west Marin County. His farm focuses on Chinese and other Asian heritage vegetables. Chang-Fleeman says in the film, "This project is really a project in identity. I need to figure out who I am and how does my identity reflect who I am."
