Since 2018, Della has been a teaching artist for Pablove Shutterbugs, a non-profit organization that teaches the art of photography to kids living with cancer. She also serves on the Board of Directors for Youth in Focus, a free after school program in Seattle amplifying teen voices through photography and arts education. This is her first documentary film project and definitely not her last.

The roots of the popular jazz fusion band Hiroshima are in pre-redevelopment Little Tokyo. Select group members discuss the sociological and cultural pulse of the early 1970s. Dan Kuramoto describes the political movements of the 1960s out of which Asian American music emerged, while June Kuramoto relates being ridiculed in her youth for playing the Japanese koto. Percussionist Johnny Mori delves into the influence of African American, Latino, and rock ‚Äòn roll music on his art. The film goes beyond a mere profile of a band to investigate the core and influences of Asian American music. Kubo moved back to his native San Jose, CA in 1982 and started teaching at De Anza College in Cupertino, CA. He later became dean of the Intercultural/International Studies Division, teaching Asian American Studies and overseeing the Ethnic Studies and International Studies programs. Kubo is now retired from De Anza College and volunteers in San Jose Japantown by running J-Town Community TV and the J-Town FilmFest.

It is widely celebrated in Vietnam and also within the Vietnamese community in the Bay Area.&nbsp;This documentary illuminates our focus on the children's holiday in bringing good luck and fortune in our local neighborhoods while identifying how Vietnamese Americans and Vietnamese people in the Bay Area continue to connect with their cultural roots. Director and Producer- Anh Le <img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/10bb5c2f8b00d57a0fe4222151b83702.jpg" width="197">Ever since Anh was a little girl, she always had a passion for penpalling. She writes letters to friends and family, learning about their experiences and culture from all over the world. Through filmmaking, Anh is passionate about telling stories that heal the wounds of society. The stories she has told and continues to write focuses on Vietnamese culture and literature in hopes of inviting friends in seeing the beauty of the Vietnamese language and people. A graduate from McKinley High School; she studied Business and Fine Arts in College.Fran married a Nisei Japanese American, he was detained in Santa Anita Race Track and later interned in Heart Mountain, Wyoming concentration camp during WWII. He served in the Army Military Intelligent Service (MIS) and was stationed in the rehabilitation of Occupied Japan.Fran loves to travel, camp, hike, garden, play the ukulele with friends, have a creative interest, and is an avid reader especially autobiographies.A real privilege to submit my 13th short film, “A Purpose Driven Life” as part of the Visual Communications Digital Histories Program to be part of the LAAPFF 2023.

A Purpose Driven Life

125,284 people of Japanese ancestry were forcibly removed from their homes and imprisoned by the U.S. government in 1942. 1,862 people died in these prisons. The filmmaker examines the health conditions in these camps, and reveals two deaths in her own family. As the sixth daughter of Chinese immigrants living in Oakland’s Chinatown in the 1940s-1960s, FLO OY WONG was determined to break free of a life of pre-destined invisibility. She began her art career at the age of forty. Her poetry career started at seventy-five. Now eighty-five, her life comes full circle when The Community Rejuvenation Project proposes to paint a mural at 723 Webster, the former site of her family’s restaurant, The Great China. Flo’s beginnings in Oakland’s Chinatown come to life once more— this time through the eyes of another artist. Drawn from Life: The Creative Legacy of Flo Oy Wong

"Because of You, I Am," is from the Japanese phrase "okagesamade," which refers to the ancestors who paved the way for the following generations. For our subjects, PJ and Roy Hirabayashi, this means immigrants from Japan, including their grandparents, who persevered against many obstacles to pave the way for them to build their lives here in America. The title has a double meaning as viewers will learn that PJ &amp; Roy have been together for over 50 years, dedicating their lives to each other and the art of Taiko.Through their story, viewers learn about the tragic history of anti-Asian racism Japanese Americans endured during WWII. As Roy and PJ point out, anti-Asian hate is on the rise again in the US, so they continue to struggle against injustice and strengthen their community. Our subjects persevered against great odds to build a singular, creative life together as artists, educating and inspiring generations of taiko drummers. Their story serves as a reminder of the transformative power of the arts and education. Because of You, I Am.

Ricky and Bobby Okamura, the current owners of Benkyodo mochi shop, established in 1906, make a difficult decision to close their family business. The Japanese pastry shop, a landmark for Japanese/Asian Americans in the Bay Area, is one of two mochi shops currently open in the San Francisco-Bay Area. Currently 115 years old, the business has endured the anti-Asian laws of the early 20th century, Japanese internment, Redevelopment of the 1960s and continues to weather San Francisco‚Äôs notorious high costs of living. The unsurmountable economic pressure, coupled with the two brother‚Äôs desire to preserve their Japanese heritage, family business and community space, create an age-old conflict many children of diaspora face--between the laborious preservation of culture or the submission to the economic forces of racial capitalism. Mele Murals was broadcasted on PBS and Al Jazeera, and was nominated for an Emmy in 2018. His previous film Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings was broadcasted nationally on PBS and went on to win the 2013 Gotham Independent Film Audience Award, which was in competition with 12 Years a Slave and Fruitvale Station.

BENKYODO: The Last Manju Shop in J-Town

Hawaii, 1977: Vic and Melvin are dropped off by their older brother in a rural Hawaii forest with an undisclosed task that no one seems enthusiastic about. As their brother‚Äôs pickup rumbles away leaving them utterly alone, they reluctantly begin their trek with an unopened pack and a shovel. Along the way they discuss the possibility of living in the wild, that is until the wild suddenly pays them a visit. Eventually, they reach their destination and carry out the unpleasant task they were sent to do. With the deed now behind them, it seems there are now more questions than answers and the boys sense that what they‚Äôve experienced may haunt them for a long time to come.
