In this series of short films, women take the center stage. Through documentary and narrative films from countries like Sudan, Saudi Arabia, and Tunisia, the women depicted in each film make space for their needs, desires, and lives.

Sara, a 20-year-old woman suffers abuse from her family, which causes unbearable anxiety. In the end, she realizes that accepting an arranged marriage might be her only option for a relatively independent life.

About the filmmaker

Mohamed Khalil is an independent film director, writer, cinematographer, and editor based in Sudan. He found his passion for filmmaking and cinema while studying electrical engineering, aiming to create social and political conscious films and contribute to the cinema and TV movement in Sudan. Prior to taking his current role as a freelance director and producer, Khalil gained experience directing and working as a first assistant director in a short film by Mohamed Alomda, and also as an intern assistant director and an actor in Amjad Abu Alala’s feature film You Will Die at Twenty. Mara is Khalil’s first short fiction film.
