Religion, sex, money, drugs, abandonment: these are all things you can expect as you meet the different generations of the dysfunctional Zweifler family across this six-episode saga. Winner of the Best Series award at the Cannes International Series Festival, and Best Drama Series at the 2024 German Television Awards, The Zweiflers explores Jewish family life in contemporary Germany, as family patriarch and Holocaust survivor, Symcha Zweifler, wants to sell his delicatessen. Things get complicated for Symcha, when he learns that his grandson and his non-Jewish girlfriend are expecting a son. This incredibly well-acted show dives head first into questions like "will the child be raised Jewish?" and "what will happen to Symcha’s deli?" and it does so in spectacular fashion. Modern day Germany makes a perfect setting for this story of religion, cultural identity and intergenerational conflict, and The Zweiflers wraps it all up with just the right amount of heart and humour.

Episode 4:

Samuel is worried about his grandmother Lilka. She keeps her health a secret. A visit to the doctor brings a sad certainty, which Samuel must keep to himself. As the birth of his child approaches, he threatens to break under the pressure. On the one hand, Samuel is prepared to do anything to get Saba to agree to the Jewish initiation rites for the baby. On the other hand, he struggles with the idea of leaving his family behind now of all times to go to Japan with Saba.
