A circle, a palindrome, and a giant cake walk into a cinema—these conceptual explorations bounce between linear narratives and abstract observations. At times delightfully oddball, at others self-reflexive, these video poems skew perspective by infusing formal structures with experimental play—collectively addressing the dualities of this bizarre and beautiful life.
Lensed in May 2012, The Moment Before the Song Begins was to be the first in a series of short films that explored the life of author Starkey Flythe, Jr. via his poetry. It was not to be. Starkey died on May 13, 2013. He was 78.
The sole public screening of The Moment Before the Song Begins was at a memorial for Mr. Flythe in October of 2013. It has since then sat on the shelf for nearly 10 years.
With its newly created prologue, it is the hope of its filmmakers that the film and Starkey can at long last find a broader audience.
