TRAILER:
"Mangosteen" is screening in the Saturday 12, 2024 1:30 pm Program
Description:
A fruit salad of creative forces chopped and assembled during Art Continuum Residency, Thailand 2020, filmed a few weeks before the world went into lockdown. This is my first "Director" debut, a privilege new title I am happy to play with. Our dip·tych heralds two stories of love. Of coming home to ourselves, over and over, through the dance.
Act 1 - Mary Oliver's "Wild Geese" attunes us to the animal body, and belonging. Geraldine and Michaël Castalan's dual-tone intimate dance contrasts with the wall of the beach shack of my home stay, a Chinese immigrant to Thailand who grew his own garden and allowed us to film here.
Act 2 - Jim's poem, which seems about "lover-love" was in fact written about coming to know himself, after a night awake. Mine and Bernardo's (German, 70's) hand dance, reflected the playful dances we had at jams that month. Mangosteen was the fruit introduced to me by Geraldine, who came to Thailand from Columbia for this fruit. Mangosteen trees take 8 -15 years before they bear fruit. Known as "the Queen of fruits" and common in Southeast Asia.
Director Biography - Marriki Schlifer
Marriki Schlifer, (aka Aalia Hashem) is Contact Improvisation Facilitator and Dance Artist from Vancouver, Canada. She splits her time teaching and living between Canada and Bali. Her curiosity and love of dance stems from sharing Contact principles, delving into the socio-psychological aspects through reflective group conversation, creative improvising, exploring dance scores, and befriending the unknown. When not dancing, she is likely meditating in nature, attempting humor with her other improvisation love - comedy improv, reading/writing poetry, or petting whichever friendly dogs cross her path.
