Discover the fascinating world of bees by taking a journey through the inner workings of a honeybee colony.

Have you ever wondered what happens inside a beehive? This is your chance to get up close and personal with one of nature's hardest little workers - the honeybee. The Secret Life of Bees is an intimate journey into the inner workings of a honeybee colony. By shooting entirely on iPhone, the filmmaker had unobtrusive access to the hive, offering us a unique perspective into this incredibly intricate super-organism. Follow the life of a worker bee from birth to cleaner, natural air conditioner, to an undertaker, acting as security and then finally leaving the hive to forage for nectar and pollen. You’ll never look at a jar of honey in the same way again.

Shot on iPhone XS Max.

Director's Statement

I have two great joys in life. Bees and Film. It’s hard to judge which I love most and difficult to separate the two. I was already very keen on Bees, and my heart sang when I first saw my footage of a bee flying in slow motion. Thankfully I’ve found a way for these passions to complement each other by making digital content about the extraordinary life of bees. I have been lucky enough to have a family who also loves bees, and I helped them launch a new beekeeping system six years ago, which was incredibly successful. This has allowed me to travel the world to shoot, edit, grade and produce content for the global beekeeping community. Beekeepers are some of the most colourful and fascinating people on the planet. When we meet, there is already a common bond. My grand plan is to make more short films, a feature and a television series. Bring bee stories to the world!

Director's Bio

Mirabai has a single-minded passion for bees. Her bee videos have featured three times in Apple’s shot on iPhone campaigns. In 2015, Mirabai created the launch film for a record-breaking crowdfunding campaign for the revolutionary beehive invention, Flow Hive. It raised over fifteen million dollars and she continues to work as a Digital Content Producer for the company.

The Flow Hive content Mirabai produced has been viewed over a billion times.

Mirabai has also worked as a live camera operator at the Byron Bay Blues Festival, assistant editor on the feature film, A Cambodian Winter, edited television commercials and contributed footage to Australian Story.

A self-professed crazy bee lady, Mirabai, lives in a caravan tending to twenty beehives and an abundant flower garden in Byron Bay. Saving a box of queen bees in a storm and warming them under the covers has earned her the nickname Mirabee. She aims to spend her life documenting the importance of the world's twenty thousand bee species and to educate the world, through incredible imagery, how fascinating and important bees are.
