Nicki is one of the first trans women to carry a baby to term as part of a groundbreaking uterine transplant trial. Just hours before her scheduled C-section, her water breaks—something the doctors said couldn’t happen. Her physician urges her to stick to protocol, warning that the outcome of her birth could impact access for future trans patients. Her husband, Benny, and her father, Al, beg her to comply. But Nicki chooses to follow her instinct and pursue a natural birth at home. She’ll give birth on her terms.

Ava Corder is an award-winning film director and writer tackling the complexities of human connection. As a transgender filmmaker hailed from the Midwest, Ava went to school at Columbia College Chicago before she took the leap to Los Angeles. Ava is drawn to narrative projects that explore gender, systems of power, and humanizing “the other.” As a music lover with a taste for experimental filmmaking, Ava also enjoys directing music videos. When she is not involved in media, she loves going on walks, singing, and decorating way too many cakes.
