Nordic-Baltic Comp: Children’s and Young Audience Film

The Young Audience program is dedicated to Nordic-Baltic films that approach an older children segment, from nine and up. Four film compete in this competition and are contenders to get the best award for children’s film, judged by the local children’s jury. Four diverse stories whit a different visual approach, that takes the perspective of a younger audience into more sensitive themes and intimate sphere.

Samppa Kukkonen (born 1979) is an animation director living and working in the Turku region in Finland. He is one of the founding partners and the artistic director of animation studio Pyjama Films. With a career beginning in the early 2000s, Kukkonen has worked on animated short films, commercials, and music videos; his most notable works include music videos Blackened Call (2018) and Cathedrals of Mourning (2019) for the metal band Belzebubs, commissioned by Century Media,11x2 min shorts for the Yellow Yeti animated series by Gigglebug Entertainment and Disney EMEA. He’s also one of the founding members of the Turun Anikistit collective, which has produced several award-winning collaborative films, including English Lessons (2008) and Wormhole (2016). Kukkonen is currently working as an episodic director for the Nickelodeon-commissioned kid’s series Super Duper Bunny League, produced by Gigglebug Entertainment.
