This talk will explore how concept design serves storytelling by focusing on single elements of a production’s visuals, enhancing the overall narrative. By leading the viewer’s eyes and thoughts in the direction the story requires, concept design assists in developing the language of the movie without words. In this session, DNEG Concept Artist Kamen Anev will explore the different stages of conceptual design, as a tool for production design or visual effects, and how that contributes to storytelling.

Kamen Anev

Kamen Anev began his career as a graphic designer in the theatrical field before turning his focus to commercials and motion pictures. He studied at MOME (Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design) in Budapest and holds Master’s degrees in both Graphic Design and Design Management. Kamen was an art director at Ogilvy & Mather, one of the largest marketing communications companies in the world, before he became a full-time freelancer as a Concept Artist. In 2019 Kamen joined DNEG as a Senior Concept Artist.

 

His current projects cover a wide gamut, from concept design, storyboards, and illustration to prop design and animatics. Most recently, he worked as a concept artist on Aladdin, Blade Runner 2049, Spiderman: Far From Home and Dune. Other film projects include Inferno, Assassin's Creed, Fallen, The Martian, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, A Good Day to Die Hard, The Borgias, and more.

Giles has over 22 years of professional animation experience with extensive credits in both traditional and computer animation. Career highlights include work for Cartoon Network, Ford, Starbucks, Disney Interactive, and credits on titles such as Robotboy, Ren and Stimpy's Adult Cartoon Party, Dan Vs, Thomas and Friends, and animating the 2D sequences in Seth Rogen’s hit film Sausage Party. Currently the Head of The School for Animation & VFX at Vancouver Film School, he has been responsible for creating an award-winning curriculum by focusing on story-driven and collaborative educational models. Colin has hosted workshops and keynotes around the globe including Mumbai, Los Angeles, Toronto, Shanghai, and Seoul. In 2017 he was invited to speak at TEDx Vancouver.
