9 Alberta-made short films that showcase talent from all around the province. From experimental animation to danceable documentaries, this diverse group of films will have something that will surely appeal to everyone.



Tells the inspiring story of African creatives in Alberta, who find a sense of belonging and community through Afrobeats, a Nigerian musical genre combining West African styles (traditional Yoruba music and highlife, American funk, jazz, and soul, with chanted vocals, complex intersecting rhythms, and percussion). It showcases their stories, and the growing popularity of Afrobeats in the Prairie region, highlighting the fusion of cultures and the importance of immigration in Canada.


With Afrobeats events happening throughout the province, this film showcases a new sound making cultural waves, with real impact.


Producer Ivan Touko will be in attendance at the September 25 screening.


RISE OF AFROBEATS IN THE PRAIRIES will be screened as a part of the SHORTS: ALBERTA SPIRIT package.
