It’s a day like any other. Kevin zooms down the street in his roaring blue convertible, blasting his favourite funky music from the stereo. With the wind rushing through his hair and the world flashing by, Kevin can’t help but feel like the coolest guy around.
As he continues down the road he spots a helpless hitchhiker who waves him over and tells him that her car broke down. This is not a problem for Kevin; he’s got one spare seat and has been looking for some company. Together, Kevin and the hitchhiker speed along to the beat of Kevin’s funky music. Life couldn’t be better for Kevin… that is until the hitchhiker decides she’d rather listen to something else. Without Kevin’s permission she changes the station on the stereo to an annoying, repetitive pop song that she can’t help dancing to, but Kevin is all but impressed. He changes the station back to his funky music and returns to his driving without a word. A moment later the hitchhiker switches to the pop music again without his permission. Kevin turns to see her staring at him: this is war.
A stereo battle ensues that captures the attention of Kevin and the hitchhiker for a little too long. With both their eyes locked on buttons and dials instead of where they're going, the two discover just what lies ahead at the end of the road… and it isn’t more road.

Director's Bio
Max Simonson is a Melbourne based filmmaker who grew up in Auckland, New Zealand making numerous short films before moving to study Screen & Media at RMIT. Since coming to Australia he has written and directed several short film projects with the hope of establishing a career as a writer/director in Melbourne and, perhaps one day, beyond!
Director's Statement
This film was made deep in the heart of Melbourne’s lockdown during the second wave of COVID-19 cases that hit during August, 2020. With restrictions prohibiting most travel and essentially any contact with non-household members, we were challenged to think way outside the box in order to make a film that could be just as fun and ambitious as anything else while also encapsulating the lockdown filmmaking spirit. With little more than some dolls, a TV and a phone, Need A Lift? was born.
