Join director Simon Otto as he takes us behind the scenes of the process of making the short, from how he became involved with the project to working alone at the beginning of production. Along the way, he and moderator David Burgess discuss the challenges and advantages of working remotely, leveraging time zones in workflow, and they share some thoughts on the bright future of independent animation.

(Love, Death & Robots - The Tall Grass, How to Train Your Dragon 1-3)


Simon Otto is a Director, animator and story artist. Most recently, Simon directed an episode for Volume Two of the Netflix series Love, Death & Robots called The Tall Grass and has acted as the supervising director/executive producer for the limited series A Tale Dark and Grimm, also for Netflix. He's currently directing his first feature at Locksmith Animation in London, titled That Christmas.


Simon is best known for his work as the head of character animation of all three How to Train Your Dragon films for DreamWorks Animation. He was an integral part of DreamWorks' animation team for over 20 years, including the studio's first film The Prince of Egypt where he started his career, working as a traditional animator.


Simon is an alumni of the renowned animation school 'Les Gobelins' in Paris.

David Burgess

Dave has almost three decades of experience in the animation industry, working on some of the most iconic 2D and CGI animated films of our time. Dave is currently the Animation Supervisor at Animal Logic's Vancouver studio and has recently wrapped on The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.


In 1991, Dave started at Walt Disney Feature Animation where he was an Animator and Supervising Animator on many of their most successful 2D films including Beauty & The BeastAladdinThe Lion King and Tarzan.


In 2001, he switched his pencil for a computer and started at PDI/DreamWorks, working as an Animator, Supervising Animator and Head of Character Animation. His credits during this time include Shrek 2MadagascarOver the HedgeMegamind and Trolls.


Dave graduated from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver with Honours in Animation.
