Director's Statement
How did “The Stuff” come about?
I had been writing mini scenarios in my phone to later turn into produced scenes for my acting package. One day I was at the grocery store and there were all these people around the eggs section and they were all securing the eggs to themselves, lifting each one carefully, examining the quality, ensure they weren’t cracked. I took a step back and thought that it looked like a massive drug deal and thought it would be a great scene for a comedy.
Why did you write “The Stuff”?
Actors are always being told to create our own work. At this point, I’ve already produced, created, starred and directed in an International Award Winning Web Series, Busy As Usual as well as a Multi International Award Winning Short Film, The Confessionist which has been in the Film Festival Circuit for one year now. When I saw SF3 (SmartFone FlickFest) advertise for 2022, I knew I had to create something, especially having just purchased the latest iPhone with cinematic filming a month before. With all of this in place, and the confidence from my previous projects, I wrote something specifically for Joanna and I where we can shine.
Why did you write a short film as opposed to a feature film, web series or other formats?
I’m still finding my feet as a writer and a director and had to create something on as little budget and time as possible. I find a short film manageable for the stage in my development as a creator and my next project, filming in 2023, will be bigger and more challenging and I’m excited to continue growing.
What inspired you when writing “The Stuff”?
Besides the initial egg situation at the store, Joanna was a great source of inspiration as her sense of humour can be dark and switch in a dime. My own sense of humour comes from misleading people only to flip the script on them so I knew that was what I wanted to do with this audience for this project too.
What was the biggest obstacle in producing “The Stuff”?
Scheduling was challenging. As creatives, it’s hard to find time when everyone is available so I really had to figure out a time when everyone would be able to come together to film while I did all the preproduction before hand.
Figuring out how to create this project on minimal budget was challenging too, especially post covid lockdown because work isn’t as readily available and therefore funds were scarce.
What I did learn though was that we creatives are very creative and overcoming these challenges makes you realise how strong you can be when you need something to happen no matter what.
Any fun stories or trivia during the production of The Stuff?
* I was so focused on the preproduction that as Joanna was making her way to set, I realised I didn’t have any eggs. She had to stop by the store to purchase some because I had forgotten the main star of the film.
* We filmed behind my apartment and throughout filming we gathered a few residents asking what was happening, one of them thinking that there was a crime scene.
The set was full of egg puns, especially when trying to come up with a log line for the film - everyone got egg-straordinarily creative!
* Lilith & Finn’s names have meanings behind them which gives you more indication as to who they are.
