The Academy Software Foundation (ASWF) is a collaborative effort to advance open source software development for visual effects and animation in the motion picture and media industries. The ASWF Diversity and Inclusion working group aims to encourage D&I across the open source software ecosystem within this industry.

Carol Payne

Imaging Specialist // Netflix

Carol Alynn Payne started her career in visual effects, working for six years at Industrial Light & Magic, most prominently as Color & Imaging Engineer. At ILM, Carol worked on over 30 films, including The Irishman and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Carol joined Netflix in 2019 as an Imaging Specialist on the Creative Technologies team, focused on standards of the future and how we can best utilize imaging technology to preserve creative intent. Carol is a Working Group chair for the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES), as well as a founding member and co-chair of the D&I working group at the ASWF.

Rachel Rose

R&D Supervisor // Industrial Light & Magic

(The Mandalorian, Skyscraper, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Warcraft)


Rachel Rose is an R&D Supervisor at Industrial Light & Magic where she co-manages the R&D team and supervises technical work in the development of high-quality digital creatures, fx, and crowds. She also supervises the development of our virtual production suite of tools called StageCraft. Rose is credited with her work on The Mandalorian (2019) where she was a Virtual Production CG Supervisor during the first season and specifically oversaw the technology development for the show. Rose is a founding member and co-chair of the D&I working group at ASWF and earned her Ph.D in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Rob Bredow

SVP, Chief Creative Officer & Head // Industrial Light & Magic

Rob Bredow is SVP, Chief Creative Officer and Head of ILM, and is responsible for the company’s overall creative strategy and technology innovations. Bredow also serves as Governing Board Chair of Academy Software Foundation. Bredow recently served as the Visual Effects Supervisor and Co-Producer on Solo: A Star Wars Story.


Bredow joined Lucasfilm in 2014 as Vice President of New Media and Head of Lucasfilm’s Advanced Development Group. He helped launch ILMxLAB in 2015 and co-wrote and directed Trials on Tatooine, a story-based virtual reality experiment created in collaboration with Lucasfilm’s Story Group, ILMxLAB and Skywalker Sound. Bredow is a member of the VFX Branch of Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences.
