When our school Drama teacher told us about SmartFone Flick Fest we, as a group, were instantly inspired. She told us all about it, and also, how our new assignment task was to write, film and produce our very own short film. Quite fitting isn’t it? We were put into groups. Isabella and I (Makinlea), both being new students to the school, were put in a group together; along with two other lovely creatives, Kiara and Olivia. We all got along very well, and Isabella and I quickly became good friends. We all worked as a team to come up with the storyline and script, which hours of work was put into. We wrote our film about a girl with bulimia and anxiety, and how she rises up and accepts help. Isabella plays our main character Angela, a self conscious, troubled girl who struggles with bulimia. Olivia plays Natalie, a kindhearted, sweet girl who is there for Angela; and Kiara plays Rachel, who’s the stereotypical mean girl, who’s very jealous and insecure. I directed, filmed, edited and produced our final short film. We chose this subject as one of our actors has struggled with this disorder for 6 years and is now finally in recovery after the brink of passing away, so we thought it would be a relevant and eye-opening concept with a message that needs to be heard by groups of all ages. This is a message that needs to be addressed for others to know the signs of someone with an eating disorder, to prevent irreversible damage to our friends, peers and loved ones. We all put in so much time and effort, even outside of school hours, and we are so happy with how it turned out. We are all so incredibly proud of our film “I’ll Be Ok”. It was definitely a really great experience to be able to work with a group of bright and creative people and create our very own, touching, emotional and heartfelt film; and we are so thankful for Ms Christine Mitchell who inspired us, helped and guided us throughout the whole process.
