SIGNIFICANT is an attempt to make a chronological retrospective in only one hour of the films that in one way or the other played a significant role in the coming of age of The Animation Workshop. Showing the development of both technique and skill over a 30-year period, the program also reflects the corresponding development in Scandinavian animation over the same time span.

The programme contains some of the first films from today's established animation directors, such as Thorbjørn Christoffersen, Martin Skov, Kresten Vestbjerg Andersen, Tobias Gundorff, Rikke Planeta, as well as unscreened and raw gems from the years where it all started.

NB! Gamlebyen Kino is an outdoor cinema, so bring a warm sweater. In case of rain, the screening will be moved inside.

Age limit: 9
Haru, a middleaged Japanese man, returns home after a devastating tsunami, in complete denial. Trapped inside his home, he discovers a Spirit of the Sea. After initially ignoring it, he soon realises the creature is drying out and dying. Haru faces reality, and makes a choice to forgive and accept, helping the creature back to the ocean. Its release restores nature’s balance, leaving the village dry and ready for rebuilding, and Haru ready to deal with his grief in a moment of bittersweet reflection.

Sofie Kampmark (b. 1988, Denmark) directed this film while studying at The Animation Workshop.
